"To the Moon... And Back."
What: "To the Moon… And Back”, an illustrated lecture by Dr. Brad Jolliff of Washington University, will be featured at the April meeting of the Saint Louis Astronomical Society. The Moon is the most accessible astronomical object. The craters and lava “seas” that cover its surface are easily seen, even through small telescopes. But many of the great advances in understanding the nature and origin of our natural satellite have been made by actually going to the Moon. Dr. Jolliff will talk about the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, a robot spacecraft now in lunar orbit, and his work with its advanced camera system. He will discuss recent findings of water at the poles of the Moon and its importance to future human lunar exploration.

New & Selected Work by Peter Rose
What: Since 1968 Peter Rose has made over thirty films, tapes, performances and
installations. Many of the early works raise intriguing questions about the
nature of time, space, light, and perception and draw upon Rose's background in
mathematics and on the influence of structuralist filmmakers. He subsequently
became interested in language as a subject and in video as a medium and
generated a substantial body of work that played with the feel and form of
sense, concrete texts, political satire, oddball performance, and a kind of
intellectual comedy. Recent video installations have involved a return to an
examination of landscape, time, and vision.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA
What: RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S OKLAHOMA!! Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. This wholesome version of the original is set in the Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the 20th century; the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their courtship. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!

What: Have you ever been so angry, so desperate, so trapped, that your only choice is to throw a party? New Line Theatre's 19th season continues with the St. Louis premiere of Andrew Lippa's pulse-pounding jazz musical THE WILD PARTY, based on the notorious epic poem about a decadent and deadly all-night party in 1920s Manhattan, poised at the fiery peak of the Jazz Age and the beginning of the end of vaudeville, just a year before the Crash of 1929. With an unflinching eye, this riveting story centers on two desperate lives spiraling downward, lives filled to the brim with meaningless sex, drugs, jealousy, betrayal, murder – all the things that make a party wild.

Tim Curtis: See How My Mind Works

What: “Writing requires collaboration with the reader and both are private acts. But encountering someone’s private thoughts in a public space changes the dynamic,” states artist Tim Curtis. In See How My Mind Works, Tim Curtis explores the use of language and text in concert with visual art. He presents an ever-evolving body of work utilizing text on chalkboards that function as object within a fine art context. The walls of the gallery will be blanketed with handmade chalkboards from floor to ceiling. Daniel McGrath: What Pictures Want
What: What Pictures Want is an ongoing series of text based paintings based on W.J.T. Mitchell’s hypothesis that pictures must be considered living things that communicate and have desires, as outlined in his essay “What Do Pictures Want?” from 2005. These paintings' desires in short, are to trade places with the beholder turning him or her into an image for the gaze of the picture. A generic font and an anonymous value scale of black and white, both are nearly ubiquitous in our visual landscape today. Zeroing in on some of the more outrageous statements made in these books, each painting conveys a statement in the form of a dryly written vinyl didactic panel.

Pump Boys and Dinettes comes to Lindenwood!
What: Bear Stage kicks off its inaugural season as the Professional Theatre Company in Residence at Lindenwood University with Pump Boys and Dinettes, a musical tribute to life by the roadside on Highway 57. Somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, there stands a gas station. Across the blacktop is a roadside eatery called the Double Cupp Diner. The four guys at the station have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by quantities of time and beer. The Cupp sisters celebrate their home cooking with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys. Pump Boys and Dinettes is part country-rock concert and part musical theatre; the sort of show that feeds off the energy and pleasure of its audience, celebrating life and love in a small, southern town.
